THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
The human immune system is a complicated built-in mechanism that affects the whole body system in many different ways. This system, equipped with antibodies, is capable of self-protection and self-recuperation from any disease or disorder. However, this miraculous system may become compromised and even dysfunctional such that its immune defenses may indiscriminately attack the body’s cells, both the unhealthy as well as the healthy ones. This malfunctioning of the immune system is known as autoimmunity.
AUTOIMMUNITY
Nobody is immune from autoimmunity, which is present in everyone to some extent. Even worse, autoimmunity can affect almost any organ or body system. Furthermore, it can be easily triggered by many environmental, physical, as well as emotional factors, such that it can cause a broad spectrum of human illnesses, known as autoimmune diseases. There are more than 100 types of autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, and myasthenia gravis, among many others. According to modern medicine, there is no cure for autoimmune diseases. Currently, modern medical science is still unable to identify the causes of autoimmunity. As a matter of fact, the concept of autoimmunity as the cause of human illness is relatively new, and it was accepted into the mainstream medicine only about half a century ago.
There are different ways to protect and boost the immune system:
(1) Protecting the Thymus
As you age, your immune system becomes weaker, as evidenced by the high incidence of influenza and pneumonia after age 25, especially among the elderly. Therefore, it is important to boost your immune system, which is closely related to your thymus (the commander-in-chief of fighters in your immune system against foreign invaders), with the 10 most important nutritional supplements:
- vitamin A to prevent thymus shrinkage (5,000 IU daily dosage)
- vitamin B6 to maintain hormone levels and to prevent thymus shrinkage (50 mg daily dosage)
- vitamin C to regulate T-cell (white blood thymus cells) function (at least 1,000 mg daily dosage or up to bowel tolerance)

Carotenoids:

- Broccoli

- Ginkgo biloba
- Grapes

Flavonoids:
Flavonoids, which are organic compounds or plant nutrients found naturally in plants, are beneficial to the human body. They help protect blood vessels from rupture or leakage, and protect cells from oxygen damage. Foods rich in flavonoids include:
- Apples
- Apricots
- Black beans
- Blueberries
- Cabbage
- Parsley
- Pears
- Pinto beans
- Strawberries
- Tomatoes
Pytosterols:
Phytosterols are plant fats (just like animal fats). Plant fats inhibit the secretion of inflammatory cytokines (pain-causing agents), and are therefore effective in controlling rheumatoid arthritis, one of the most debilitating and difficult-to-treat autoimmune diseases today.
Foods rich in phytosterols include the following:
- Almonds
- Cashews
- Sesame seeds
- sunflower seeds
- Barley
- Peas
- Soybeans
However, your body may have difficulty in absorbing plant fats, and therefore take a supplement of sterinol daily.
